Origin

The origins of Almansa Castle date back to the end of the 11th century, although its profile must have been very different from the current one, and could have been a watchtower or a fortified enclosure similar to a small citadel, and it is possible that the oldest existing walls at lower levels are from this time.

Around the first half of the 13th century, from 1242 to 1244, the infante Don Alfonso, future Alfonso The Castle and Villa de Almansa are part of the limits of the Crown of Castile.

In 1911 the mayor of Almansa denounced the ruinous state of the Castle, seeking its demolition, although thanks to the reports made by the Royal Academy of History and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, it was not only saved, but also, By Royal Order of February 1921 it was declared a National Historical-Artistic Monument.

Present

In 1952 the Castle underwent a profound restoration on its periphery. Inside, not reconstructed, only a few remains remained that allow us to conjecture its primitive configuration. During the works carried out, a beautiful spiral staircase was discovered that, from the Torre del Homenaje, gives access to the upper terrace of said tower.

In 1990, a project to repair and stabilize the cracks was launched, which basically consisted of stitching together the rock strata, which was carried out by placing anchors and underpinning the walls with cement injections. Ten buttress beams were placed to collect the anchor heads, which can be seen on the eastern flank.
